Short answer
The ClickUp Chrome extension creates tasks, attaches Gmail, bookmarks a page as a task, opens your Notepad, takes a manual browser screenshot, and starts a timer. It is on every plan and works in Google Chrome only. ClickUp's time tracker does not take screenshots for you.
The ClickUp Chrome extension is a capture tool for the browser you already have open. From it you can create a task, attach a Gmail message, turn a page into a task, open your Notepad, take a screenshot of the browser window, or start a timer on a task. ClickUp Help says it is available on every plan and only in Google Chrome.
It is not a second ClickUp. Lists, statuses, and views still live in the Workspace. The extension is how work gets in while you are on another site. Setup for the Workspace itself is in how to use ClickUp. The ClickUp hub links pricing and the mobile app, which is the phone version of capture, not a Chrome add-on.
What can the ClickUp Chrome extension do?
Help lists the jobs in one sentence: track time, create tasks, bookmark websites, add notes, and gather screenshots while you use Chrome. Each of those is a tab or a setting, not a background process.
| Action | Where it lives | What Help says it does |
|---|---|---|
| New task | New Task tab | Name the task. Optionally add assignees, a due date, or a description |
| Bookmark | Bookmark tab | The page title and URL become the task title. You can add a description and include a screenshot |
| Notepad | Notepad tab | Opens your ClickUp notes, synced across devices. You can convert a note to a task |
| Screenshot | Screenshot tab | Captures the browser window, or an area you drag. You mark it up, then download or attach it |
| Timer | Track Time tab | Start a timer on a task. Time Spent shows recent entries you can remove |
| Gmail | The ClickUp icon in an open email | Attach that email to an existing task or create a task with the email attached |
Guests and limited members with full edit permissions can use the extension to create tasks. If a control is missing, check the role before you reinstall.
You can switch Workspaces from the avatar in the upper left. The plus icon beside Workspaces adds another Workspace you already belong to. You can also save a default List: on the New Task tab, pick the destination, open the ellipsis, and choose Save as default. New tasks then land in one place instead of whichever List you used last.
How do you install the ClickUp Chrome extension?
Help's install path starts in the App Center.
- Search for and select the Chrome Extension.
- Click Install, review the description, and click Add to Chrome.
- Review the required permissions and click Add extension.
- Click the ClickUp icon, then Login or Signup.
- Pick the Workspaces you want the extension to use.
The permission prompt is broad because of what the screenshot and the URL capture need. Help's table is the list to read before you confirm:
| Permission Help names | Why Help says it is required |
|---|---|
| Read and change all your data on the websites you visit | To take screenshots and capture the URL |
| Display notifications | To notify you that an action succeeded |
| Manage downloads | To save screenshots to your computer |
Help also says the only other data sent to ClickUp is the emails you chose to attach to tasks, and error reports from the extension. If that permission set is wider than you want, do not install it. Creating tasks inside ClickUp still works without the extension.
Settings has five toggles: Floating Buttons, Email feature, Time Tracking, Notepad, and Edit screenshots by default. The floating button sits on the page for quick access. Drag it to move it. Hover the x to hide it. Turn Floating Buttons off if you do not want it on every site.
To remove the extension, open Chrome's extension icon, use the ellipsis next to ClickUp, choose Remove from Chrome, and confirm.
How do you capture a task or a screenshot?
A bookmark is the fastest path from a page to a task. Open the Bookmark tab. Help says the page title and URL are set as the task title automatically. Add a description if the title is not enough. Include Screenshot if the page itself is the reference. Use this for a bug on a webpage, a spec you need to answer, or a competitor page you will act on. It is a poor fit for a vague "look at this later" with no next step. Rename the task so the List stays readable.
The New Task tab is better when the work is not the page. Name it, add an assignee or a due date if you already know them, and create it. Empty capture tasks are fine in an inbox List. They are not fine if nobody triages that List. Pair this with a default destination so Chrome tasks do not scatter across Spaces.
Screenshots are manual. Open the Screenshot tab and choose Entire screen or Select area. Select area lets you drag around a part of the page. Help is explicit that the feature only captures information inside the browser window. It does not grab the rest of your desktop.
Markup tools on that image are: a paintbrush, an arrow, a line, a circle, a square, text, blur, numbers, a pointer to adjust what you added, and undo and redo. Download uses the arrow icon beside the image. Attach to task sends it to a task you pick. If Edit screenshots by default is on, the editor opens after every capture.
You can also attach a screenshot you just took to a comment. Leave the image in the extension, open the task, open the comment editor, and click the Chrome attachment button.
How do time tracking and Gmail work in the extension?
The Track Time tab lists tasks. Pick one and start the timer. Time Spent shows time logged on recent tasks, and you can remove an entry that was a mistake. That is the whole timer story in the extension article.
Plan limits for time tracking still apply. Our ClickUp time tracking guide notes that ClickUp lists time tracking as a trial on Free Forever, and that native time tracking is included from Unlimited at $7 per user/month billed annually. Prices checked October 2026. The extension does not bypass that. An owner or admin still enables the Time Tracking ClickApp in the Workspace.
ClickUp's introduction to time tracking says ClickUp time tracking does not take screenshots. The timer does not record your screen while it runs. A screenshot happens only when you open the Screenshot tab and capture. Treat those as two decisions.
Gmail is a separate path. Open an email, then click the ClickUp logo. Attach to task searches for an existing task. New task creates one in a location you choose, with the email attached. To hide the icon in Gmail, open Settings in the extension and turn off Email feature.
If the icon or a tab is missing, Help's troubleshooting article says to update Chrome, open the extension Settings and confirm the feature toggle is on, allow third-party cookies if the extension is blocked, and reinstall from the Chrome extensions page if it is still wrong. Reinstall steps are in that article: chrome://extensions/, Remove, then install again from the App Center.
The ClickUp mobile app is the other capture surface, for a phone. Use the extension when the work is a browser tab. Use the phone app when you are away from that browser. You do not need both on day one.
Which limits should you plan around?
The extension is on every plan, in Chrome only. It will not appear in Safari, Firefox, or Edge. Storage for screenshots you attach still counts toward the Workspace. Free Forever includes 60MB. A few marked-up images are small. A habit of attaching full-page captures of every tab will meet that cap. Paid plans include unlimited Workspace storage, which is the practical reason a screenshot-heavy inbox moves off Free Forever. Unlimited is $7 per user/month billed annually ($10 monthly). Business is $12 billed annually ($19 monthly). Enterprise is custom.
The extension is a capture door. It is a poor place to manage a project. After the task exists, set the status, the assignee, and the date in ClickUp. ClickUp pricing is the plan table if the free storage cap or the time-tracking trial is the constraint you hit first.
Install it for one job you already do in Chrome, such as turning a Gmail request into a task. Add the screenshot tab when a page is easier to mark up than to describe. Leave the floating button off if it gets in the way.

Frequently asked questions
Is the ClickUp Chrome extension free?
Yes. ClickUp Help says the extension is available on every plan, including Free Forever. It only runs in Google Chrome.
Can the ClickUp Chrome extension take screenshots?
Yes, when you use the Screenshot tab. Help says it only captures what is inside the browser window. You can mark it up, download it, or attach it to a task. It is not an automatic capture while a timer runs.
Does ClickUp time tracking take screenshots?
No. ClickUp's time tracking introduction says time tracking does not take screenshots. The extension timer and the screenshot tab are separate actions you start yourself.
Can guests use the ClickUp Chrome extension?
Help says guests and limited members with full edit permissions can use the extension to create tasks. Other actions still depend on what that role can do in the Workspace.
How do you turn off the ClickUp icon in Gmail?
Open the extension, go to Settings, and turn off Email feature. That hides the email feature in Gmail.
