Short answer

The ClickUp Slack integration is on every plan. You can create a task from a message with /clickup new, and you can post task activity to a Slack channel. A ClickUp Workspace connects to one Slack workspace. Guests cannot use the integration.

The ClickUp Slack integration keeps Slack as the place people already talk, and turns the messages that are real work into tasks. It also posts selected ClickUp activity back to a channel, so a status change does not require a second write-up. It is not ClickUp Chat. Chat is the conversation inside ClickUp. This integration is the bridge when the company will stay in Slack.

The integration is on every plan. A ClickUp Workspace can connect to only one Slack workspace at a time. That Slack workspace can connect to more than one ClickUp Workspace. Guests and limited members cannot use it. The ClickUp hub links the neighboring features, including ClickUp Chat.

What does the ClickUp Slack integration do?

ClickUp Help groups the useful jobs like this.

  • Create a task from Slack. Use the slash command, or start from a message. The task lands in a List you choose.
  • Edit a task from its Slack preview. Name, description, location, assignees, status, priority, tags, and due date can be changed from that preview.
  • Attach a Slack message to a task. Help says the message is added as a comment, styled as a quote, with a link back to Slack.
  • Preview a ClickUp link in Slack. After a personal connection, a task, comment, or Doc link unfurls with details such as status, assignees, and priority.
  • Sync activity to a channel. Examples in Help include new tasks, status changes, new comments, new attachments, and assignee changes.
  • See Slack links that were pasted on a task. After the first Slack link in a description or comment, a Slack icon in the task sidebar lists them.

There is no cap in Help on how many activity syncs you add. If several people set up the same messages, Help says you will not see duplicates.

Slack Automations are a further step: a Slack trigger can create a task or send a message, using the same trigger-and-action model as other automations. Help says those automation integrations are on the Business plan and above, an owner or admin must turn on the Automation ClickApp, and Slack Automations cannot be set up in Chat channels. You do not need that layer to create a task from a message.

How do you connect Slack to ClickUp?

Two connections show up in the Help articles, and they do different jobs.

Workspace connection. Only an owner or admin can enable this. It is the shared connection. Activity sync from a Workspace connection can target public Slack channels only. When you set it up, Help says you can pick specific public channels for Connected Search or choose all public channels.

Personal connection. Each person who will create tasks, see link previews, or sync private channels has to authorize Slack on their own account. Help is explicit: you must enable and authorize your own connection before you can create or edit tasks from Slack. A personal connection can sync both public and private channels.

The generic App Center path is: search for Slack, choose the connection tab, click Connect, sign in, and authorize. Disconnect later from the same Slack entry, using the menu and Disconnect. You can add it again.

A few limits are easy to miss:

  • One ClickUp Workspace, one Slack workspace.
  • You only see channels you have joined, and the channel cannot be deleted.
  • A new channel can take about 5 minutes to show up in ClickUp. Help says you do not need to log out.
  • For a private channel, invite the ClickUp Slack app with /invite @ClickUp so activity messages can reach it.
  • You can only pick public channels you are in, or private channels that have ClickUp access.
Connect one List to one channel first. A sync of every Space into a general channel is how the integration gets muted.

How do you create a task from Slack?

Authorize your personal connection before these steps. Then either start from a command or from a message.

Slash command

  1. In a channel, send /clickup new.
  2. Choose Create Task.
  3. Name the task and select the List.
  4. Optionally set assignee, status, priority, tags, and due date. Those fields appear after you pick the List.
  5. Click Create.

From a message

  1. Open the message menu (the ellipsis). The first time, Help says to use More message shortcuts.
  2. Choose Create Task.
  3. Name it, pick the List, and set the same optional fields.
  4. Click Create.

To add the message as a comment on a task that already exists, use Add comment to Task from the message's Connect to apps menu. Search for the task and add it. The comment shows up on the task in ClickUp.

Edit from the preview when a field is wrong: click Edit under the preview, change the details Help lists (name, description, location, assignees, status, priority, tags, due date), and save.

Pick the List on purpose. A task created in the wrong List looks like a Slack success and a ClickUp mess. If you run one List per client or per project, say that List's name in the channel topic so people stop guessing.

How do you sync ClickUp activity to a channel?

Turn the integration on first. Guests cannot enable these messages.

From the App Center, open Slack and choose Add next to Sync ClickUp Activity to Channels.

  1. Select a Space, Folder, Subfolder, or List.
  2. Select the Slack channel.
  3. Choose the messages. On a personal connection, Help includes "Assigned to me" and "Include Private," plus the activity types you want.

Personal connections can post to public or private channels. Workspace connections post to public channels only. There is no documented limit on the number of these syncs.

Use a narrow location. A single project's List, posting status changes and new tasks, is enough for a client channel or a team channel. Comments on every task in a whole Space will flood a channel that also has human conversation.

Notification settings are separate from this sync. Help points to a notifications article for which of your own ClickUp actions trigger a Slack notification. Set the channel sync for the team, and your personal notifications for yourself. They are not the same switch.

When should you use Chat instead of the Slack integration?

SituationUse
The company already works in SlackThe Slack integration, and leave chat there
A small team will talk next to the taskClickUp Chat
You want a merged pull request to change a task, or a form to create workClickUp automations, plus Slack Automations only if you are on Business or above
A client should see dates, not your SlackA shared List or Calendar, not a Slack channel

ClickUp Chat on Free Forever includes a Workspace message cap. The chat guide records it as 1,000 messages. Slack does not have that ClickUp cap, and it is the tool people already check. Remote teams in ClickUp for remote teams can use either. Pick one place for decisions. If the decision is in Slack, create the task from that message so the decision is not only in the scrollback.

Prices checked October 2026. You can connect Slack on Free Forever, which is $0. Unlimited is $7 per user/month billed annually ($10 monthly). Business, where Slack Automations start, is $12 per user/month billed annually ($19 monthly). Full tables are in ClickUp pricing.

Authorize your own Slack connection, create one task with /clickup new into a List you can open, and only then add a channel sync for that List.
