Short answer

ClickUp Chat is channels and direct messages inside the workspace, and you can create a task from a message. Free Forever includes 1,000 messages for the whole Workspace, with 90 days of history. An admin has to turn the Chat ClickApp on.

ClickUp Chat is the workspace's own conversation tool: channels, direct messages, and a path from a message to a task. It is not a second copy of every Slack habit, and the free plan is not unlimited chat. If you know the cap and what a channel is for, you can decide whether to move the team or leave chat where it already works.

Details below come from ClickUp Help on Chat and the plan limits article, plus our tool data checked in October 2026. The ClickUp hub is the index of the other features around it.

What is ClickUp Chat?

ClickUp describes Chat as team communication that stays inside ClickUp so you are not switching tools to find the context. You get channels and direct messages. ClickUp Help also says you can create tasks from messages, and that ClickUp Brain can summarize threads. Brain is a separate AI add-on in our data, from $9 per user/month. It is not included in the Unlimited plan price.

Chat does not appear until someone turns it on. An admin or owner opens the App Center, finds the Chat ClickApp, and enables it. While Chat is on, the Comment Reactions and Threaded Comments ClickApps cannot be turned off.

After that, channels and direct messages live in the Home Sidebar and in the Chat Sidebar. Members can see public channels by default and can create channels. Guests are more limited: they see channels they were invited to, and view-only guests cannot send channel messages.

What can you do in Chat?

Use Chat for the conversation that does not belong on a single task yet.

Use Chat forUse a task comment for
A channel for a client, a launch, or a teamFeedback on one deliverable
A direct messageA question only the assignee needs, on that task
A decision you will turn into a taskThe running log after the task exists
A post in a channelA doc people should be able to find later

ClickUp for remote teams is the broader page on async work. Chat is one piece. Docs and task comments are the other pieces. A remote team that puts every update in Chat and never on the task will lose the status. A team that refuses Chat and pastes decisions into random tasks will also lose them. The split in the table is the practical rule.

Scheduled messages are a paid feature. Free Forever cannot schedule messages. Unlimited, Business, Business Plus, and Enterprise can. Our public price table lists Unlimited at $7 per user/month billed annually and Business at $12. It does not list a Business Plus rate. Scheduled send is already on Unlimited, so you do not need a higher tier for that one control.

Chat data retention, which is separate from the history limit, is Enterprise only.

What are the free plan Chat limits?

ClickUp Help publishes this split. The free numbers are Workspace-wide, not per person, and the message cap does not reset each month.

Free ForeverUnlimited and above
Send messagesYes, up to 1,000 messages for the WorkspaceYes, no message cap in the table
History90 daysUnlimited history
Schedule a messageNoYes
PostsYes, up to 30 Posts, and that cap does not resetYes
Chat data retentionNoEnterprise only

One thousand messages sounds like a lot until a team of eight uses a channel every day. Treat Free Forever Chat as a trial of the habit, not as the company inbox. When you hit the cap, the upgrade that removes it is Unlimited, at $7 per user/month billed annually ($10 if you pay monthly). See ClickUp pricing and Free vs Unlimited.

All roles can use Chat, with the guest limits above. Limited members who are view only can still be invited as Chat collaborators if you need someone who talks in Chat without a full seat. Confirm the current guest rules before you promise a client a login. How to use ClickUp is the setup overview if the Workspace itself is still new.

When should you keep Slack?

Keep Slack, Microsoft Teams, or whatever you have when any of these are true:

  • The company already lives there, including people who will never open ClickUp.
  • You need the app directory and habits around that chat tool more than you need messages next to tasks.
  • External communities or customers expect that tool.
  • You are on Free Forever and the 1,000-message cap would strand the archive.

ClickUp lists Slack, Microsoft Teams, and Zoom among its integrations. Using Slack for the company-wide room and ClickUp for task comments is a valid split. Moving a project channel into ClickUp is also valid when the people in that channel are the people who do the tasks.

Do not run both for the same project "just in case." Two rooms means the decision is in whichever one you were not reading.

Turn Chat on for one project channel before you announce a company move. If people still decide things in Slack and paste a summary, you have not moved.

How does Chat relate to docs?

Chat is a bad home for the policy, the brief, or the spec. Those belong in ClickUp Docs, which you can find again. A channel is where you argue the brief and then link the doc. ClickUp's own pitch is that you stop switching tools. That only holds if the durable writing is a doc and the short talk is Chat or a comment.

Brain summaries of a thread are helpful when a channel got long. They are not a substitute for writing the decision on the task. If you pay for Brain, use the summary to draft the task comment, then keep the task as the record.

How to decide

  1. If the team is under about ten people and the work is already in ClickUp, try one channel on Unlimited so you are not testing against a 1,000-message wall.
  2. If half the company will never use the project tool, leave general chat where it is and use task comments inside ClickUp.
  3. Create tasks from messages that assign work. A message with no task is a conversation. A message that names an owner and a date should be a task.
  4. Revisit after two weeks. If the channel is quiet and the tasks are active, comments were enough. If the channel is where status actually happens, keep Chat and stop pasting the same status into another app.

Chat is worth it when the people talking are the people doing the tasks. It is an expensive distraction when it becomes a second Slack with a lower limit.

Frequently asked questions

Is ClickUp Chat free?

Chat can be used on every plan, including Free Forever. Free Forever is capped at 1,000 messages for the whole Workspace, and that cap does not reset. History on that plan is 90 days.

How do you turn on ClickUp Chat?

An admin or owner activates the Chat ClickApp in the App Center. Channels and direct messages then open from the Home Sidebar or the Chat Sidebar.

Can you create a ClickUp task from a chat message?

Yes. ClickUp Help says you can create tasks from Chat messages, so a decision in a channel can become work with an assignee.

Does ClickUp Chat replace Slack?

It can, if the team is willing to talk where the tasks live. Teams that already run in Slack can keep Slack. ClickUp lists Slack as an integration.

What is the difference between Chat and a task comment?

A comment sits on one task. Chat is channels and direct messages for the conversation that is not yet, or not only, a single task.
