Short answer
ClickUp Gantt view plots tasks on a timeline with start dates, due dates, dependencies and milestones. Free Forever includes 60 uses, and the Unlimited plan and above include unlimited Gantt view.
The ClickUp Gantt chart is a view of the tasks you already have. Bars show start dates, due dates and duration. Arrows show dependencies. Diamonds mark milestones. The chart updates as dates and statuses change, which is the point of keeping the schedule in the same place as the work.
For the wider setup, read ClickUp for project management. The ClickUp hub links views, pricing and use cases from one page.
What is the ClickUp Gantt chart?
ClickUp Help says a Gantt chart plots tasks along a timeline so you can see start dates, due dates, durations and dependencies. Gantt view is the interactive version of that chart. You add it at any level of the hierarchy: a Space, a Folder, a Subfolder or a List.
To create it, click + View in the Views bar and choose Gantt. New views open on a week scale. You can switch the scale to Day, Week, Month, Quarter, Year or Flexible. Flexible lets you zoom. Hold Cmd or Ctrl and scroll to zoom, and hold Cmd or Ctrl while dragging to move sideways.
The left sidebar lists the locations and tasks in that view. The right side is the chart. ClickUp's planning article says a task needs both a start date and a due date to appear as a bar. A task with only a due date, or with no dates, stays in the sidebar. Hover the timeline next to that row and click to set the dates, then drag the ends of the bar to change them.
You can create Folders, Lists, tasks and subtasks from the sidebar. Reordering items there also updates the Spaces sidebar, so that drag changes the hierarchy.
Progress sits on a bar for each Space, Folder, Subfolder or List. Hover it for the percentage: tasks completed divided by total tasks. The bar runs from the earliest start date to the latest due date. In week view, days outside your workweek, public holidays and organization-wide exceptions are grey, from the Workspace work schedule. The default color scheme marks active tasks blue, closed or done tasks green, and milestones yellow.
How do dependencies work on a ClickUp Gantt chart?
Dependencies are how the chart shows sequence. In Gantt view, hover a task until the connector appears, drag the line to another task, and drop it. An arrow appears. ClickUp Help uses this example: if task A is blocking task B, the arrow starts at A and ends at B. You can drag from the start or the end of a bar to the start or the end of another bar.
To remove a dependency, click the line, then click the x icon. You can also set dependencies from List or Board view, before you build the chart, by opening Relationships on the task.
Turn on Reschedule dependencies in the Gantt layout options if a date slip should move the tasks that follow. Dragging a task then shifts the later tasks in the chain. Help sets a hard cap: rescheduling can update up to 1,000 dependent tasks at a time. If a change would touch more than 1,000, the task you dragged still moves, and none of its dependent tasks move with it.
Two other controls are easy to mix up with that chain. Syncing a parent task with its subtasks makes the parent span the earliest subtask start and the latest subtask due date, and dragging the parent moves the subtasks with it. Dragging a whole Space, Folder or List by its progress bar remaps every scheduled task in that location. On that bulk move, Reschedule dependencies and Skip Non-Working Days are not applied. The drop position is the new schedule.
How do milestones and critical path work?
A milestone marks a point you do not want to miss: a client review, a launch, the end of a phase. In ClickUp, Milestone is a custom task type. Turn a task into one from the Gantt sidebar (right-click, Task Type, Milestone) or from the task itself. Gantt view draws it as a diamond. In the status color scheme, milestones stay yellow until the task is Done or Closed. Use a filter on task type when you want a list of milestones only.
ClickUp's own planning article suggests using them sparingly. If every other bar is a diamond, the chart stops showing which dates are fixed.
Critical path and slack time answer a different question: which slip moves the finish date, and which does not.
- Critical path is the chain of tasks that sets the earliest finish. Help says tasks on that path are shown in red when there is no time gap between a task and the dependent task blocking the deadline. The last task in a group is always highlighted, because that group's finish depends on it.
- Slack time is the buffer. Help shows it as a dashed bar: how far a task can move before the project finish moves.
Open Customize, then Layout options, and enable Critical path, Slack time, or both. Guests can use these tools. Plan limits are in the next section. If the red path looks too short, Help points to two causes: hidden weekends breaking the chain, or missing dependency links and time gaps. Close the gaps if you want those tasks on the path.
Baselines are a snapshot of task dates so you can see what moved later. Help lists them as unavailable on Free Forever and Unlimited, 10 baselines per location on Business and Business Plus, and 20 per location on Enterprise.
When someone outside the Workspace needs the picture, ClickUp's planning article says you can export the chart as a PDF or PNG. That export is on the Business plan and above. You can also share a Gantt view with a public link.
Which plan includes the ClickUp Gantt chart?
ClickUp Help's views table is the clearest limit. The pricing page marks Gantt as a trial on Free Forever, which matches a capped number of uses rather than a missing feature. ClickUp's pricing FAQ defines a use: uses add up across the Workspace and do not reset. At the limit you keep the data, and you cannot edit or create new items with that feature.
Prices were checked in October 2026. See ClickUp pricing for the rest of each plan.
| Plan | Annual price | Gantt view | Critical path and slack time | Baselines |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Free Forever | $0 | 60 uses | Not listed on Free. Pricing page marks a trial starting on Unlimited | No |
| Unlimited | $7 per user/month | Unlimited | 100 uses in Help. Pricing page marks this as a trial | No |
| Business | $12 per user/month | Unlimited | Unlimited uses in Help | 10 per location |
| Enterprise | Custom | Unlimited | Included with Business and above in Help | 20 per location |
Monthly billing is $10 for Unlimited and $19 for Business. Custom task types, which include milestones, are marked as a trial on Free Forever on the pricing page.
Store the brief for the same project in a Doc so the chart is not the only record of scope. ClickUp Docs covers wikis, pages and task links.
When should you skip the Gantt view?
ClickUp Help says Gantt charts fit work with a sequence, fixed deadlines and dependencies: a launch date, a build that cannot start before a design is approved, a release tied to a calendar. They are a weak fit for discovery, a support queue, or a board where priority changes every day. For that work, List or Board view is the better daily screen.
Kanban vs Scrum is the decision if you are choosing a board method rather than a timeline. Many teams keep both: Gantt for the phase plan, Board for the week.
Asana is the alternative if you want a polished Timeline and you would rather not configure views. Asana is easier to roll out. ClickUp costs less per user and keeps docs, time tracking and the Gantt chart in one Workspace. Compare them in ClickUp vs Asana. monday.com also lists a Gantt view, and it suits teams that want colorful boards more than a dense schedule.
A workable ClickUp schedule is ordinary: one List per phase, start and due dates on every task that should appear as a bar, dependencies only where order is real, and a milestone on the dates a client will ask about. Turn on critical path after the arrows are in place, not before.
