Short answer

Assigning a ClickUp comment makes it a required item for that person, and ClickUp says the task cannot be closed until the item is done. The assignee is notified. Resolving the comment notifies the person who assigned it.

An assigned comment in ClickUp is feedback with an owner. ClickUp's Help article is direct: assigning a comment creates a required item for that person to finish before the task can be closed. The person is notified. An unresolved comment also shows up in their subtasks, task lists, and Team view.

That is a different object from a task assignee. The assignee owns the task. The assigned comment owns one change: a line in a Doc, a note on a proof, a question in the thread. Use it when the work is "please fix this," not when the work is a new deliverable. New deliverables belong as tasks. The ClickUp hub links both patterns.

How do you assign and resolve a comment?

You can assign a new comment while you are writing it, or assign one that is already on the task. Threaded replies can be assigned the same way a parent comment can.

MomentWhat Help says to do
New commentClick Assign, then search or browse for the person
Existing commentHover the comment, click Assign, then choose the person
FinishedClick the Resolve checkbox

Resolve records the name of the person who checked it, next to the checkmark. It also notifies the person who assigned the comment. Hover the resolved comment to see the day and time. On the Assigned Comments page, the Resolve button is in the upper-right of the item.

Do this in a review instead of a vague "thoughts?" message:

  1. Leave the comment on the exact spot: a task update, a sentence in a Doc, or a proof.
  2. Assign it to the person who must change something. If two people must act, two comments stay clearer than one comment with two names and no owner.
  3. The assignee gets the notification and sees an unresolved item in their lists.
  4. They make the change and click Resolve.
  5. You get the resolved notice. Hover if you need the time.

If you are the assignee, your queue is Home, then Assigned Comments. If you do not see it in the Home Sidebar, click More and select it, then pin it so it stays. The page opens on Assigned to me, newest first. Click an item to open its thread. Delegated by me is the other tab: comments you handed to someone else and may still be waiting on.

Search is in the upper-right of that page. Filters in the upper-left can limit the list to tasks, Docs, or Chat, and can show resolved items. On Assigned to me, a date filter offers All Time, Last 30 days, Last 60 days, Last 90 days, and Last 180 days.

Assign the comment only when a close is blocked on that change. A compliment, a status note, or a question you can answer in the thread does not need an assignee.

Where do assigned comments show up?

Help lists more than one place. You do not have to live on the Assigned Comments page, but that page is the only full queue.

PlaceWhat you can see or do
Every viewAn icon for your unresolved assigned comments. Click it to move through them on that task
List viewAn Assigned Comments column that counts unresolved assigned comments. Add it like any other column
Board viewYou can assign comments from the board
TaskAn Assigned Comments section, or a quick link. Click a row to jump to the comment
SubtasksAn icon on the right of a subtask. Click it to read the comment without opening the subtask
ProfilesComments section, Assigned tab
DocsSelect text to create an assigned comment. Threads stay on the Doc. Docs Hub has Assigned to me
ProofingAssign comments while proofing images, videos, and PDFs
InboxComments assigned to you are Primary notifications

List view is the place to put the count column if a manager wants "how many open notes are on each task" without opening them. Me Mode on a List can include or exclude tasks where you only have an assigned comment, which is why a task can look like yours even when you are not the assignee.

Inbox is the alert. Assigned Comments is the list you work down. If you only watch Inbox, a cleared notification can hide a comment that is still unresolved. Resolve the comment. Do not only clear the notification.

Docs deserve the same habit as tasks. Select the sentence, assign the comment, and keep replies in that thread. You can link a Doc to a task by typing /Doc in the task's comment field or by adding the Doc as a relationship. After the Doc is linked, assigned comments from that Doc can be opened from the task's comment section by clicking the embedded Doc. The Docs guide covers pages and wikis if the review lives in a document instead of a task description.

Proofing is the visual version: comments on images, videos, and PDFs, assigned to a person. A design review that used to be a meeting can be a proof plus assigned comments, with Clips when the note is easier to say than to type.

When should you use a task, a checklist, or an assigned comment?

The three get mixed because all of them can have a person's name on them. The close rule is the splitter. Help says an assigned comment is required before the task can be closed. A checklist item is a step on the task. A subtask is its own task, with its own status.

NeedUseWhy
"Change this sentence" or "answer this"Assigned commentIt blocks close, and it stays attached to the words
"Remember these steps"ChecklistThe steps are part of doing the task, not a review note
"This is a separate deliverable"Task or subtaskIt needs a status, a date, and maybe its own assignee
"Tell the client where things stand"A task comment or a shared view, not an assigned commentNothing is blocking close

Subtasks vs checklists goes further on the last two. Assigned comments sit beside them: they are the review layer, not the plan.

A client review is the case that pays off. Share the task or the Doc with the people who should comment. You, or the client if they can comment, assign each change to the person who will make it. Your Delegated by me tab is the list of open notes. When Resolve comes back, you are not hunting the thread to see whether the logo note was done. For the update you send after that, use a written status, not another assigned comment. Project updates for clients is that template.

Do not assign a comment to "the team" and hope. Help's assign flow is a person you search for. A comment with no assignee is easy to read and easy to skip, which is fine for context and wrong for a change that has to ship.

What gets in the way

A few limits are easy to trip on:

  • Closing the task is tied to the required item. If a task will not close, look for an unresolved assigned comment before you change the status workflow.
  • Guests see less of the Workspace. The Inbox article says guests do not see every user's name. Pick assignees the guest is actually allowed to work with.
  • Clearing an Inbox row does not resolve the comment. The comment stays required until someone checks Resolve.
  • A comment on the wrong task still blocks that task. Put the note on the task or Doc that should wait, not on a nearby parent you plan to close today.
  • Team view and task lists will keep showing the unresolved item. Hiding a column does not finish the work.

Assigned comments are a small feature with a sharp edge, which is why they work. One comment, one person, a checkbox, a notice back to the requester. Used that way, review stops being a meeting and becomes a list you can finish. Used on every sentence, they become a second task system and the close button is always blocked. Keep them for changes that must happen before done.

Frequently asked questions

What does assigning a comment do in ClickUp?

It notifies that person and creates a required item they must finish before the task can be closed. Unresolved assigned comments also show in subtasks, task lists, and Team view.

How do you assign a comment in ClickUp?

While drafting, click Assign and choose a person. On an existing comment, hover it, click Assign, and choose a person. Threaded replies can be assigned the same way.

How do you resolve an assigned comment?

Click the Resolve checkbox after the action is done. ClickUp records who resolved it and notifies the person who assigned the comment. Hover to see the day and time.

Where do you see every comment assigned to you?

Open Home, then Assigned Comments. The Assigned to me tab lists them newest first. Delegated by me shows comments you assigned to other people.

Yes. Select text in the Doc and assign the comment. Replies stay in a thread. The Docs Hub has an Assigned to me section for those comments.
