Short answer

ClickUp custom task types let one Workspace hold different kinds of work, such as Bug, Invoice, or Content, each with its own icon and name. Owners and admins can create up to 100 types. Free Forever includes 20 tasks set to a non-default type. Unlimited and above include unlimited uses. Milestones count as one of these types.

A ClickUp custom task type tells you what the task is, not where it sits and not whether it is done. A bug, an invoice, a piece of content, and a milestone can share one List and still look different, because each type has its own icon and name. The icon replaces the status icon, so a glance at the List is enough to separate them.

Owners and admins create the types once for the whole Workspace. Anyone who can edit a task can apply a type that already exists. Free Forever includes this, with a hard cap of 20 tasks that use a non-default type. Prices below were checked in October 2026. Related building blocks are custom fields and custom statuses. The ClickUp hub links the rest.

What are ClickUp custom task types?

Help describes them as your own building blocks: campaigns, content, invoices, clients, events, inventory, leads, accounts. The useful test is whether people ask "what kind of item is this?" If the answer changes the icon, the fields you expect, or the automation that should run, it is a candidate for a type. If the answer is only "how far along is it," that is a status. If the answer is a fact such as a dollar amount or a client name, that is a field.

Milestones are a custom task type, shown with a diamond. They count toward the same use limits. The dedicated walkthrough is ClickUp milestones.

Each type stores four things you set at creation: an icon, a singular name, a plural name, and a description. Names have to be short. The maximum is 16 characters, so "Invoice" and "Bug" fit, and "Marketing campaign" does not. The description maximum is 100 characters. You can create at most 100 types in the Workspace.

Help also says you can attach Custom Fields by task type, so an Invoice type can carry fields that a Bug type does not, alongside the fields that already belong to the List or Space. This guide does not assign a plan price to fields-by-type. Check ClickUp's field limits before you depend on a different form for every type.

How do you create a custom task type?

Workspace owners and admins use this path:

  1. Open Workspace settings, then Settings.
  2. In the left sidebar, click Task Types.
  3. Click + Create Task Type.
  4. Set the icon, the singular name, the plural name, and the description.
  5. Click Create Task Type.

Edit uses the same Task Types page. The ellipsis next to the type opens Edit, where you can change the icon, both names, the description, or add a Custom Field. You can create a new field or attach an existing one. Save applies the change to tasks that already use the type and to tasks created later.

Members cannot create or edit types. Guests cannot either. That is deliberate: a Workspace with 30 people inventing type names will hit the 100-type ceiling with synonyms. Keep creation with the people who own the Workspace settings.

To remove a type, an owner or admin chooses Delete, types the type name, and selects a replacement type for existing tasks. Help says this cannot be undone, and that you cannot restore the type. If many tasks have to move, the update can take a few minutes. Do the replacement on purpose. Deleting "Bug" and dumping those tasks onto the default task type is how a board loses its meaning.

How do you apply a type to a task?

Where you areWhat Help says to do
An open taskIn the upper left, click the current task type and pick another
A viewRight-click the task, click Task Types, and pick the type
Quick createAt the top of the create modal, click the current type and pick another
Several tasksUse the Bulk Action Toolbar to set the type on the selection
A ListSet a default type so new tasks in that List start as that type

Members can change the type on a task when they have edit or full edit permission. Guests can do the same when they have that permission on the task. Setting the List default requires edit or full edit on the List, and guests cannot set it. Admins and owners can do all of these, plus create the type itself.

A default on the List is the part that keeps data clean. A bugs List that defaults to Bug means people do not have to remember the type when they hit quick create. A content calendar List can default to a short name such as "Content." You can still change one task afterward.

List view can show a task type column, and you can sort by it. Filters on any view can keep a single type, which is how a mixed List becomes a bugs-only board for the afternoon. Search from the AI Command Bar can filter by task type before you type the query: filter icon, Task type, then the type, then the words you are looking for.

Help also says Brain can fill the task type. Brain is ClickUp's AI add-on, priced in our data from $9 per user per month. The types still work if you never turn Brain on. See ClickUp AI for what the add-on is.

How do automations use task types?

Task type is available on Automation triggers, conditions, and actions. Help's examples are specific:

  • When a task is created with the project type, apply the project task template.
  • When a task is set to the invoice type, add it to an Invoice Tracking List.
  • Use a leads type for prospects. When the deal is won, create an account type for the ongoing work.

Templates can store a task type, so a "new client" template does not come in as a generic task. Pair that with a List default and you rarely set the type by hand.

Automation action limits are separate from task type limits. Free Forever includes 5 active automations and 100 actions a month. Unlimited includes 500 active automations and 1,000 actions a month. Integration automations start on Business. If the type is only a label and a filter, you do not need those automations on day one. The general feature is covered in ClickUp automations.

Which plan includes custom task types?

PlanTasks set to a different type
Free Forever20 uses
UnlimitedUnlimited uses
BusinessUnlimited uses
Business PlusUnlimited uses
EnterpriseUnlimited uses

A use is a task set to a different type, not the number of type definitions. Creating "Bug" and "Invoice" does not, by itself, spend the 20. Setting 20 tasks to Bug does. Milestones spend the same pool. A team that converts every launch task into a milestone can use the free cap before anyone creates a custom name.

Our prices, checked October 2026: Free Forever is $0, with unlimited members and 60MB of storage. Unlimited is $7 per user per month billed annually ($10 monthly). Business is $12 per user per month billed annually ($19 monthly). Enterprise is custom. Our data does not publish a Business Plus price. Plan details are in ClickUp pricing.

Spend the 20 free uses on one List you actually filter, such as bugs or invoices. A type that nobody filters on is a synonym for the default task, and it still counts.

How should you choose among type, status, and field?

Use this split before you add a fifth type.

You are encodingUseExample
What the item isTask typeBug, Invoice, Content
How far along it isStatusIn review, Blocked, Paid
A fact about itCustom fieldSeverity, Amount, Client
A loose label you may stackTagQ4, Urgent client, Website

Statuses stay short because the board columns are the statuses. Types stay few because 16-character names and a 100-type ceiling still produce a messy picker if every team invents its own. Fields hold the values you total and filter, such as an invoice amount. Tags are the optional overlay, with their own Space scope, described in ClickUp tags.

Notion is the stronger place for a freeform wiki of client pages. ClickUp is the stronger place when those clients also need statuses, assignees, and a board. A type named Client can represent the account inside ClickUp, which is the pattern Help describes, and it is still a task. It is not a full CRM record. The honest limits of that setup are in ClickUp as a CRM.

Start with two types plus Milestone. Add the next type only when an automation or a filter needs it. The ClickUp review is the wider picture if you are choosing the tool because the work itself comes in more than one shape.
