Short answer

A ClickUp milestone is a custom task type, shown with a diamond, for a major point such as a launch. Convert a task from List, Board, Calendar, or Gantt, then filter the view by task type. Free Forever includes 20 custom task type uses. Unlimited and above include unlimited uses.

A ClickUp milestone is not a separate object you build from scratch. It is a task you mark as the Milestone task type. ClickUp puts a diamond next to the name so a launch, a signed brief, or the end of a phase is easy to spot in a List or on a timeline.

That is the whole feature. The useful part is where the diamond shows up, who can set it, and the plan cap. A plain definition of the idea, before the product, is in what is a project milestone. The timeline picture is in ClickUp Gantt chart.

What is a ClickUp milestone?

ClickUp Help describes milestones as a way to mark a major accomplishment, such as releasing a feature, and to track progress on epics. The type is one of ClickUp's custom task types. You can tell a milestone from a normal task by the diamond beside the name.

A milestone still has the fields of a task: a status, dates, an assignee, comments. The type changes how you read it. The work that produces the result stays on ordinary tasks. The milestone is the checkpoint those tasks lead to.

ClickUp's Gantt planning article tells you to use them sparingly. A chart where every other row is a diamond stops showing which dates are fixed. Three to seven checkpoints is enough for most projects that last a few weeks. A milestone on every task is just the task list with a new icon.

How do you turn a task into a milestone?

You convert a task that already exists. ClickUp Help gives two paths.

From an open task, click the ellipsis in the upper-right corner. From List, Board, or Calendar view, click the ellipsis to the right of the task name. Then select Task Type and choose Milestone.

In Gantt view, the planning article uses the sidebar: right-click the task, select Task Type, and click Milestone. The chart draws a diamond. Color depends on the Gantt color scheme. In the status color scheme, Help says milestones stay yellow until the task is Done or Closed.

Where you areHow to convert
Open taskEllipsis in the upper-right, then Task Type, then Milestone
List, Board, or CalendarEllipsis to the right of the name, then Task Type, then Milestone
Gantt sidebarRight-click the task, then Task Type, then Milestone

Guests and members can change the type when they have edit or full edit permission on that task. Creating new task types, and editing those types, is limited to admins. Help's edit article says only Workspace owners and admins can edit or delete custom task types. Members and admins can set a default task type on a List when they have edit or full edit permission on that List, so new tasks in the List start as that type. Guests cannot set that default.

You do not need a custom type of your own to use Milestone. It is already included among custom task types. Admins can create other types, up to 100 per Workspace, with a name of up to 16 characters and a description of up to 100 characters. Those limits are for types you add. They are separate from the question of how many tasks you can set to Milestone.

Name the task after the result. "Homepage approved" can be checked off. "Design review" only means a meeting happened. The project brief is the right place to write what "approved" means.

Where do ClickUp milestones show up?

The diamond is the marker in the task name. A few views make that marker do extra work.

PlaceWhat you see
List, Board, CalendarDiamond next to the task name. Convert from the task menu on these views.
GanttDiamond to the left of the name. Color follows the color scheme. Status coloring keeps milestones yellow until Done or Closed.
Portfolio cardA Milestones column: an icon when the List contains any, and the names on hover or click.
FiltersA Task type filter set to Milestone, so the view shows only those tasks.

Calendar is the right screen when the checkpoint is a day on the week, and the other events are preparation. ClickUp calendar view covers how dated tasks land on that grid. Gantt is the right screen when the checkpoint sits in a chain of dependencies. The diamond is not a duration. The bars in front of it are the work.

If you report on many projects at once, the Portfolio card on a Dashboard can show a Milestones column for each List. Hover or click the icon for the names. That card is not on Free Forever. ClickUp portfolios explains the card, the columns, and the Unlimited plan where it starts. The column only helps after the Lists actually contain milestone tasks. An empty icon means you have not marked any.

Dashboards can also surface milestone information as part of reporting. The layout of those cards is in ClickUp dashboards. Keep the source tasks current. A dashboard cannot invent a checkpoint you never created.

How do you filter a view to milestones only?

A mixed List is hard to scan once the project has dozens of tasks. ClickUp Help's filter is the clean way to see every milestone in one place.

  1. Open the view that holds the project tasks.
  2. In the upper-right, click Filter. At the top of the view, click Filters.
  3. In the dropdown, select Task type.
  4. Click Select task types.
  5. Choose Milestone.

Save that view if the same people ask for the checkpoint list every week. The filter does not change the tasks. It only hides everything that is not a milestone. Clear it when you go back to doing the work.

Use the filter in a status meeting instead of scrolling. Read the next open milestone, the date on it, and the open tasks that block it. If the milestone date is still green while the tasks in front of it are late, the date is wrong. Move the milestone in the same edit. ClickUp task dependencies is how you draw that "waiting on" link so a slip is visible.

Which plan includes ClickUp milestones?

ClickUp Help's custom task type table is the limit that matters. Custom task types include milestones. Prices below are from our tool data, checked in October 2026. Confirm both the cap and the price on ClickUp's pricing page before you train a team on the button. Plan detail is in ClickUp pricing.

PlanPrice in our dataCustom task type uses, from Help
Free Forever$020 uses, meaning tasks set to a different type
Unlimited$7 per user/month billed annually ($10 monthly)Unlimited uses
Business$12 per user/month billed annually ($19 monthly)Unlimited uses
Business Plus and EnterpriseEnterprise is custom. Our data does not list a Business Plus price.Unlimited uses

The 20 uses on Free Forever are shared by every custom task type, not reserved for milestones. If you also set tasks to another type, those tasks count toward the same 20. At a small project with a handful of checkpoints, Free Forever is enough. A Workspace that marks checkpoints on many Lists will hit the cap and should look at Unlimited.

Gantt view has its own use limit, separate from the task type. The Gantt guide covers that cap. You can mark a milestone on a plan that still has Gantt uses left, and you can also mark one from List view if you are not ready to open the chart.

The ClickUp hub collects the setup guides if the Workspace itself is still new. Start with one List, dates on the real tasks, and milestones only on the dates a client or a manager will ask about.

When should you use a milestone, and when not?

Use a milestone when someone outside the task list needs a yes or no.

SituationUse a milestone?Use instead
"Design approved" or "site live"YesKeep the drafts and the deploy as normal tasks in front of it
A weekly internal to-doNoA normal task with a due date
An annual target shared by several projectsNoClickUp goals and OKRs
Every subtask in a checklistNoSubtasks or a checklist. The split is in subtasks vs checklists
A date a client will ask about on a multi-step jobYesPut the diamond on that date only

A solo list of errands does not need diamonds. Trello is the easier board if the work is a few columns and you do not want task types at all. Asana is the more polished timeline if your team wants a structured rollout and will pay for it. Jira fits a software team that already lives in sprints. ClickUp fits when the checkpoint, the tasks, and the doc for the brief should live in one Workspace.

A practical set for a small client project looks like this. Replace the names. Keep the shape.

PhaseMilestone taskWhat stays a normal task
StartBrief signedKickoff notes, open questions
DesignDesign approvedDrafts, revisions
BuildFeature completeImplementation tasks
LaunchSite liveDeploy and the handoff note

Filter to those four when you write the weekly update. Open the full List when you are doing the work. That is the habit that makes the diamond useful. If you cannot say the milestone date out loud, it is not a checkpoint yet.

Frequently asked questions

What is a milestone in ClickUp?

It is a custom task type. ClickUp shows a diamond next to the task name so a launch, approval, or other major point stands out from ordinary work.

How do you create a milestone in ClickUp?

Open the task menu from the task, or from List, Board, or Calendar. Choose Task Type, then Milestone. In Gantt, right-click the task in the sidebar and choose the same option.

Are ClickUp milestones on the free plan?

Yes, with a cap. ClickUp Help lists 20 custom task type uses on Free Forever. Those uses are tasks set to a different type, and milestones count. Unlimited and above list unlimited uses.

How do you see only milestones?

Open Filters on the view, choose Task type, then select Milestone. That leaves the checkpoint tasks and hides the rest.

Is a ClickUp milestone the same as a goal?

No. A milestone is one task type on a project. Goals are a separate feature for targets, often across more than one List.
