Short answer

ClickUp task tags are available on every plan after an owner or admin enables the Tags ClickApp. A task can hold up to 40 tags. Tags belong to a Space. Tag Manager, the Workspace-wide cleanup screen, is on Business Plus and Enterprise.

ClickUp tags are short labels on a task: a color and a name you can filter and group by. They are useful when the same kind of work shows up in many Lists, such as "bug," "client review," or "needs asset." They are a poor place to store a due date, an owner, or a stage. Those already have fields.

Tags are on every plan once an owner or admin enables the Tags ClickApp. The cleanup tool, Tag Manager, is not. This page covers both, and when a custom field is the better slot. The rest of the product is on the ClickUp hub.

How do you create a tag?

Confirm the Tags ClickApp is on, then:

  1. Open a task.
  2. Click the Tags field.
  3. Type the name.
  4. Press Enter on PC or Return on Mac.

You can also create tags from Tag Manager if your plan includes it. That screen is described below.

A task can carry up to 40 tags. Help states that cap for every task in the Workspace. Forty is enough for a controlled vocabulary. It is also enough to hide a task under labels nobody maintains. Pick a short list for the Space and stop.

How do you rename, recolor, or delete a tag?

Open a task, click the tag, and choose one of these:

ActionWhat happens
RenameEvery task in the current Space that uses the tag gets the new name.
Change colorThe color updates on those tasks.
DeleteThe tag is removed from every task in the Space.
Click the x beside the nameThe tag comes off this task only. The tag still exists for other tasks.

You can reach the same edits by hovering a tag on a task in List view or Board view.

Deleted tags can be restored from the Trash for 30 days. After that window, Help does not describe a restore path. Delete is a Space-wide action, so check the name before you confirm it. Taking a tag off one task uses the x, not Delete.

To remove a tag without opening the editor: hover the tag above the task name and click the x.

Do tags stay inside one Space?

Yes. Help says tags are managed at the Space level, and that a change applies to tasks in the current Space. Tags are unique to each Space. There is one exception that affects filters: if two Spaces use the same tag name, ClickUp treats those as the same tag when you filter or look at all Spaces together.

That exception is why names should match on purpose. If "Design" in the marketing Space and "Design" in the product Space mean different things, the all-Spaces filter will mix them. Rename one of them, or keep the filter inside a single Space.

The Space is also why a giant tag list is hard to clean later. Agree on names when you create the Space, in the same pass as statuses. A tag called "ASAP" and another called "Urgent" will both get used.

Doc tags are a different feature. Help says task tags and Doc tags are not the same, and that Doc tags also require the Tags ClickApp. Use Doc tags on the knowledge base, and task tags on the work. ClickUp Docs covers the doc side.

Who can add or edit tags?

ClickUp Help splits this by role:

RoleCreate, edit, delete tagsAdd or remove tags on a taskTag Manager
Members and adminsYesYesYes, on plans that include it
Guests, limited members, view-only rolesNoOnly if an owner or admin grants it for that personNo

Guests never get the right to invent a new tag. That is useful with clients. You can let a guest mark a task with a tag you already created, such as "approved," without letting them add "final FINAL" beside it. Guest setup is in ClickUp guest access.

Owners and admins are the people who enable the ClickApp. Members can create tags after that, on every plan.

Which plans include Tag Manager?

Help's plan table for tags:

PlanUse tags on tasksTag Manager
Free ForeverYesNo
UnlimitedYesNo
BusinessYesNo
Business PlusYesYes
EnterpriseYesYes

Tag Manager is the screen for auditing tags across the Workspace. Help says you can open it from the Workspace avatar, by right-clicking a Space and choosing Tags, or by typing "Open Tag Manager" in the AI Command Bar. Tags in that screen are grouped by Space. To add one: select the Space, click New tag, set the name and color, and press Enter or Return.

Our price list, checked October 2026, does not include a Business Plus rate. It lists Free Forever at $0, Unlimited at $7 per user per month billed annually ($10 monthly), Business at $12 billed annually ($19 monthly), and custom Enterprise. Confirm the current Business Plus price on the ClickUp pricing page before you upgrade only to clean up tags. Most small teams can live without Tag Manager if the Space has a short, agreed list. The plan comparison we publish is in ClickUp pricing.

When is a custom field the better label?

Use a tag when the value is a loose label and a task might need several. Use a custom field when you need one structured value, a number, or a dropdown you will report on.

NeedUse
"This task is a bug and it blocks launch"Two tags
One client name you will group and filter foreverA dropdown custom field
The stage of the workA status, not a tag
Hours you expect the task to takeA time estimate

Board view can group columns by tag, which is handy for a one-off sort and a bad way to run the daily process. Statuses should stay the columns people drag between. Tags should answer a second question, such as which channel or which request type.

In table view, show the tags column when you are cleaning a List: sort, scan for near-duplicates, and remove the ones the Space no longer uses. Do that before a guest or a new teammate starts copying the messy set.

Frequently asked questions

Are ClickUp tags on the free plan?

Yes. ClickUp Help says every plan can use task tags, including Free Forever. An owner or admin must turn on the Tags ClickApp. Tag Manager is only on Business Plus and Enterprise.

How many tags can a ClickUp task have?

Up to 40. That cap is per task, across the Workspace.

Do ClickUp tags work across Spaces?

Tags are defined per Space. The same name in another Space is treated as the same tag when you filter or view all Spaces. Renaming or deleting still applies inside the current Space.

Can guests create ClickUp tags?

No. Guests cannot create, edit, or delete tags. Owners and admins can allow individual guests and limited members to add or remove existing tags on tasks.

Are Doc tags the same as task tags?

No. ClickUp Help treats Doc tags as a separate label for Docs. Both depend on the Tags ClickApp being enabled.
