Short answer
ClickUp followers, formerly called watchers, are notified when a task changes. They are not the people who have to finish it. Assignees are added as followers automatically. Following is on every plan, including guests. Guests need edit or full edit permission to add or remove followers.
A ClickUp follower hears about a task. An assignee is supposed to finish it. Help still notes the old name, watchers, and the current behavior is the same idea: highlighted people on the task get updates when something changes. Assignees are followers automatically. Everyone else is optional. You add a manager, a client guest, or a neighboring team when they need the trail and should not own the work.
Following is on every plan. Guests can follow. Adding and removing followers is closed to guests who lack edit or full edit permission. Notifications land in Inbox, which is covered in ClickUp Inbox. The rest of the product is on the ClickUp hub.
What is a ClickUp follower?
Followers are the notification list on one task. Help separates that from responsibility in one sentence: unlike assignees, followers are not necessarily responsible for completing the task. Use the role when someone must see a status change and must not show up as the owner in a report.
| Role | Has to do the work | Gets task updates | Where you set it |
|---|---|---|---|
| Assignee | Yes | Yes. Assignees are followers automatically | The people icon |
| Follower | No | Yes, until you remove them | The bell icon |
| Assigned comment | Yes, for that comment | Yes. Help also adds you as a follower when a comment is assigned to you | The comment |
| Team (user group) | Only if you assign the Team | Yes, if you add the Team from the bell | The bell, or an assignment |
A Team is a user group. You can click a Team's avatar in the bell menu the same way you click a person. That does not make every member an assignee. How Teams are capped by plan is in ClickUp user groups. An assigned comment is a piece of required work inside the thread, which is a different object. That flow is in assigned comments.
You can filter views by follower on every plan. Help lists Follower among the filters that do not need a ClickApp. That is how a lead finds "tasks I am watching" without also being the assignee. Me Mode will not do that job: its Comments option is about comments assigned to you, not about tasks you follow.
How do you add or remove a follower?
On an open task:
- In the upper right, click the bell icon.
- Click an avatar to select yourself, another person, or a Team.
- The follower's avatar highlights.
Help says that person then receives task updates in their notifications. Under each name, the menu also shows the last time that follower viewed the task. Use that when you are about to ping someone who already opened it this morning.
The same bell is available from Quick Create. For many tasks at once, select them and open the Bulk Action Toolbar. Click the eye icon, then the person's or Team's avatar, to add or remove that one follower across the selection.
To remove someone, open the bell and click the highlighted avatar again. Help's result is specific: they receive task updates only when someone @mentions them or assigns them an item on the task. Removing a follower does not unassign them. If they are the assignee, check the people icon separately. The bell and the assignee field are two lists.
From the task settings menu (the ellipsis in the upper right, or a right click on the task in a view), Unfollow task keeps you on @mentions only. That is the control to use on your own account when you commented once and do not want the rest of the thread.
Which actions add you as a follower?
You will not always remember clicking the bell. Help lists actions that add you on their own:
- The task is assigned to you.
- You edit the task name or description.
- You comment, including a comment created by email.
- A task comment is assigned to you.
- You create the task.
- You change the due date, the status, or the priority.
Automations can add or remove followers too. If people appear on tasks they never opened, check the automation on that List before you blame the bell.
Notification settings add a personal switch called Auto follow tasks I am involved in. With it on, ClickUp adds you when you work a task. Help lists four toggles under that setting:
| Toggle | When you are added |
|---|---|
| When I create a task or subtask | You create it |
| When a new subtask is created in a parent task I'm following | Someone adds a subtask to a task you already follow |
| When I edit a task or subtask | You change it |
| When I comment on a task or subtask | You comment |
Those settings are yours. Help says notification preferences are per person and per Workspace, they are on every plan, and guests can set their own. You cannot open notification settings from the mobile app. On the web, click your avatar in the upper right and choose Notifications, or open Inbox, then Customize or the settings icon, then Notification settings.
If the bell list is growing because you edit other people's tasks all day, turn off the edit toggle and leave the comment toggle on. You will still follow the threads you actually joined.
How should a team use followers?
Followers are how a task stays visible without a second owner. A few patterns that match the way Help defines the role:
| Situation | What to do |
|---|---|
| A manager wants status changes and is not doing the task | Add them from the bell. Leave the assignee as the person doing the work |
| A client guest should see one task | Add the guest as a follower if they already have access to the task. They can follow on every plan |
| A whole group should hear about one task | Add the Team from the bell. Do this when you do not want each person assigned |
| You commented and now get every edit | Unfollow, or narrow Auto follow so edits do not add you |
| You need someone to reply | Assign the comment. Following does not require a reply |
Do not use followers as a backup assignee. Reports that group by assignee will not show a follower as the owner, which is the point, and it is also how work gets dropped. If two people must both finish the task, assign both. Help's assign tools cover one person, several people, a Team, or Multiple Assignees. Following is the audience. Assignment is the commitment.
Guests without edit permission can still follow a task someone else adds them to. They cannot add or remove followers themselves. That is the right shape for a client who should receive updates and should not rearrange the watcher list. Sharing the List in the first place is a permissions question, covered in guest access.
A short weekly habit keeps the list honest. Open the tasks you follow, remove yourself from anything that closed or moved to another owner, and leave the bell on for work you still have to answer for. Inbox gets quieter because the follower list got shorter, not because you muted the Workspace. If the underlying List is hard to scan, start with how to use ClickUp and a smaller set of statuses before you add more watchers.

What is a follower in ClickUp?
A follower is notified when a task changes. Help says followers used to be called watchers, and they are not necessarily responsible for finishing the task.
Are ClickUp followers on the free plan?
Yes. Help says people can be added as followers on every plan. Guests can follow tasks.
How do you add a follower in ClickUp?
Open the task, click the bell in the upper right, and click an avatar for yourself, another person, or a Team. Highlighted avatars are the current followers.
Why did I become a follower without clicking the bell?
Help lists common triggers: the task is assigned to you, you edit the name or description, you comment, a comment is assigned to you, you create the task, or you change the due date, status, or priority.
How do you stop ClickUp task updates?
Click the bell and click the avatar again, or choose Unfollow task from the task settings menu. After that, Help says you are notified only when someone @mentions you or assigns you an item on the task.
