Short answer

ClickUp for software development covers sprints, a backlog, Sprint Points and GitHub on every plan. Sprint cards, Sprint Automations and GitHub Automations start on Business. Dedicated engineering teams deep in Atlassian often stay on Jira.

ClickUp for software development is a Workspace where product, engineering, QA and design share one backlog. Sprints, Sprint Points and the GitHub integration are available on every plan. The charts that show velocity and burndown, plus GitHub Automations, start on the Business plan.

If engineering is the whole company and you already live in Jira, Confluence and Bitbucket, stay there. If the same people also write specs, file bugs and answer other departments, ClickUp is the cleaner single tool. The side-by-side is in ClickUp vs Jira. Setup basics for any team are in how to use ClickUp, and the rest of the ClickUp pages are on the ClickUp hub.

Is ClickUp good for software development?

ClickUp Help describes the software setup as one Workspace for product, engineering, QA and design: a roadmap, feature delivery and bug fixing, using Scrum or Kanban. A new Space can start from the Product + Engineering workflow, which includes Sprints.

That is a different job from a pure issue tracker. Jira is built for Scrum and Kanban boards, backlogs, sprints and release tracking, and it goes deep on custom issue workflows. Docs sit in Confluence, which is a separate product. ClickUp puts tasks, Docs and chat in the same Workspace, so a spec can sit next to the sprint that implements it.

Prices were checked in October 2026. Jira Premium is about $14.54 per user/month on the same basis. ClickUp Business is $12 per user/month billed annually, or $19 billed monthly.

The trade-off is real. Jira is the specialist for a team that thinks in issues, workflows and releases. ClickUp asks you to configure more, and the interface is busier until you hide what you do not use. Cross-functional teams usually accept that in exchange for one subscription. A startup version of the same choice is in ClickUp for startups.

How do ClickUp sprints work?

ClickUp Help defines a sprint as a fixed period, often one to two weeks, in which the team commits to a set of tasks, finishes that set, then reviews before the next sprint. The sprint planning article also describes windows of one to four weeks. In the product, duration is a setting, not a fixed rule.

You turn this on with the Sprints ClickApp. A Workspace owner or admin activates it and chooses which Spaces can use it. Sprint Folders hold the work. Each sprint behaves like a List: you add tasks, views and, if you want, a List template so every new sprint starts with the same structure.

ClickUp Help says the Sprint Folder duration defaults to two weeks. Owners and admins set the default duration and start date. Members can then create sprints and manage tasks inside those settings. Custom Sprint Duration is available on every plan if one team needs a different length.

Effort is either Sprint Points or time estimates. Sprint Points are a separate ClickApp. Help describes them as a relative effort estimate, not hours, and says point values are customizable. A common scale is 1, 2, 3, 5, 8 and 13. Free Forever and Unlimited include 100 uses of Sprint Points. Business and above include unlimited uses. Points per assignee are on Business and above.

Sprint Points100 usesUnlimited uses
Sprint cards (burndown, burnup, velocity, task report)NoYes
Sprint AutomationsNo, except the built-in action that marks a sprint doneYes. They do not count toward the monthly automation limit

Guests with edit or full permissions can add or change Sprint Points. Guests cannot create sprints. Only an owner or admin can turn the ClickApp on.

Before you close planning, lock the forecast with Confirm sprint. ClickUp Help says that sets the burndown baseline. If the committed points are far above recent velocity, the chart will show it early in the sprint.

How do you plan a sprint in ClickUp?

ClickUp's sprint planning article walks through a sequence. Use it as the default until the team has a reason to change it.

  1. Create a Sprint Folder in the engineering Space. Hover the Space, click the plus icon, and choose Sprint Folder. Set duration and start date. The first sprint is added for you.
  2. Keep the backlog as its own List in that folder, next to the active sprints.
  3. Prioritize with the built-in levels: Urgent, High, Normal and Low. If you need more, Help suggests custom fields such as a dropdown for initiative, a label for team, or a number for a business-value score. Free Forever includes 60 uses of custom fields. Unlimited and above include unlimited uses.
  4. Estimate during grooming, not in the planning meeting. Open the App Center, activate Sprint Points for the Space, and set points on the task.
  5. Move work into the sprint from the Backlog card. Use Add to sprint in the Sprints column, or select several tasks and add them from the Bulk Action toolbar.
  6. Open the Assigned card and give every task an owner. Help says Workload view can show each person's assigned points or hours against capacity before you finish.
  7. Click Confirm sprint so the forecast is locked.

At the end of the sprint, ClickUp prompts you to move unfinished tasks to the next sprint, send them back to the backlog, or close them. Spillover is expected. The decision is whether the task is still the priority.

While the sprint is open, a Board view is enough for a standup. ClickUp Help says to open the sprint List, add Board view, and group by Assignee so each person has a column. Group by Status instead if you want to walk In Progress, In Review and Blocked. The board is the status update. People only need to talk about what the board cannot show.

For the difference between a board and a sprint cadence, see Kanban vs Scrum. Dates and dependencies across a release sit more naturally on a timeline. That view is covered in ClickUp Gantt chart.

Reporting is a plan decision. On Business and above, three cards answer the mid-sprint questions:

  • Sprint Burndown plots remaining work against a guideline based on the locked forecast. Above the line, the team is behind. Below it, the team is ahead.
  • Sprint Velocity compares committed Sprint Points with completed Sprint Points across the last 3 to 10 sprints.
  • Sprint Burnup plots completed work against total scope, which is how you see tasks added after the sprint started.

You can also add a Task List card pointed at a bugs List, sorted by a severity custom field or by Priority, so bugs sit on the same Dashboard as the sprint. Dashboard setup, including who can see it, is in ClickUp dashboards.

How does ClickUp connect to GitHub?

The GitHub integration is available on every ClickUp plan. It does not give ClickUp users access to the repository code. It links the work item to the commit, branch or pull request.

Only a repository admin can add a repository to ClickUp. After that, a Workspace owner or admin attaches the repository and links it to one or more Spaces. A Space can have several repositories. Guests and limited members cannot use the integration. Members can create a personal connection. Only owners and admins can create the Workspace connection.

ConnectionWhat you can doWho sets it up
PersonalLink previews, create a GitHub issue, branch or pull request from a task, and open the GitHub panel on the taskEach member, for their own GitHub account
WorkspaceSync GitHub activity to tasks, update a task status from GitHub, and search connected repositoriesWorkspace owner or admin

ClickUp links new GitHub activity automatically when a valid task ID appears in the pull request title, the pull request description, the branch name or the commit message. Accepted forms include #{task_id} and CU-{task_id}. Custom task IDs work too, and that ClickApp is on Business and above. When the ID is in a pull request, GitHub gets a comment that links back to the ClickUp task. You can also open the task, click the GitHub icon, and paste a link by hand.

To change status from a commit or pull request message, append the status in square brackets with no space, for example #ud5b[ready]. That behavior is part of the Workspace connection. Creating the branch from the task uses a name format you can edit. The default is :taskId:_:taskName:_:username:.

GitHub Automations are separate, and they require the Business, Business Plus or Enterprise plan. Help's example is an automation that changes the linked task status when a pull request is merged. You can also create a GitHub issue from a ClickUp trigger, such as a bug form. The same Help article says the GitLab integration is on every plan as well. Bitbucket can be linked to Spaces in the same style: commits, branches and pull requests on tasks in a connected Space.

A practical rule for the team is short. Put the ClickUp task ID in the branch name, which happens automatically if you create the branch from the task. Then the pull request, the commits and the task stay tied together without a second tracker.

Which ClickUp plan do software teams need?

Start on Free Forever if the team is small and you want to learn the hierarchy. You get sprints, custom sprint duration, 100 Sprint Points uses, Docs and the GitHub integration. You do not get Sprint cards or GitHub Automations. Storage on Free Forever is 60MB for the Workspace.

Move to Unlimited, at $7 per user/month billed annually or $10 billed monthly, when storage, Spaces or guest access block you. Sprint Points stay at 100 uses on Unlimited. The reporting jump is Business, at $12 per user/month billed annually or $19 billed monthly. That is the plan where burndown, burnup, velocity and GitHub Automations turn on, and where Sprint Points are unlimited.

Enterprise is custom. AI is not included in these plans. Brain AI is an add-on from $9 per user/month. Full figures are in ClickUp pricing.

A small engineering team that only needs a backlog and a board can stay on Free or Unlimited and read status from the Board. A team that plans from historical velocity should budget for Business before the first sprint review, not after the charts are missing.

Docs still matter on every plan. ClickUp Help suggests marking architecture decision records, incident runbooks, engineer onboarding and API notes as wikis, so ClickUp Brain treats those pages as the source of truth. Keep the wiki short. The sprint tasks can link to the page that explains the decision.

If the team is already fluent in Jira and the rest of the company does not need the same tool, Jira's free plan for up to 10 users is a fair starting point, and Standard is close to ClickUp Unlimited on price. Choose ClickUp when product, design and engineering should share the backlog, the spec and the sprint. The ClickUp review covers the rest of the product if you are still comparing.
