Short answer

ClickUp time estimates are available on every plan after an owner or admin turns on the Time Estimates ClickApp. You enter them in plain language, such as 1h or 30 mins, on a task or from List, Table, Gantt, and Team view. Estimates per assignee start on Business.

A ClickUp time estimate is the hours you think a task will take. It is there so you can see capacity before the week fills up. It is not the timer. Tracking records what already happened. Estimating records what you planned.

Both features can sit on the same task. Turn on estimates first if the question is "can we finish this," and read ClickUp time tracking when the question is "what do we bill." The product overview is on the ClickUp hub.

What are ClickUp time estimates?

ClickUp Help calls this the Time Estimates ClickApp. It is available on every plan. Guests can use it when an owner or admin has given them permission. Someone with the owner or admin role has to switch the ClickApp on. Until that happens, the field does not appear.

For a task with more than one person, you can give each person a different estimate. That split is a higher plan, covered below. A team, as a group assignee, cannot hold an estimate. Help is explicit: teams cannot be assigned time estimates.

How do you turn time estimates on?

Owners and admins can enable the ClickApp for the whole Workspace or for one Space.

For the Workspace:

  1. Open the App Center.
  2. In the left sidebar, click All ClickApps.
  3. Search for Time Estimates and turn the toggle on.
  4. Use the dropdown if you only want it in certain Spaces.
  5. Set the number of hours in a working day, and check the box if estimates should display in hours.

For one Space: in the Spaces sidebar, click the ellipsis beside the Space, then Space settings, then ClickApps. Select Time Estimates and click Done.

The hours-per-day setting matters once you look at workload. A 6 hour estimate on an 8 hour day is a different load from the same estimate on a 6 hour day. Set the day length to match how the team actually works, then leave it alone.

How do you enter an estimate?

From a task, click the Time Estimate field and type plain language. Help's examples are 1 hour, 1h, and 30 mins. Press Enter on Windows or Return on Mac. Click the value again to replace it.

The same field is available in List view, Table view, Gantt view, and Team view, once the column is visible. Table view is the practical place to fill estimates down a list of tasks. Gantt is the place to see whether those hours still fit the dates.

If the task has several assignees, you can split one estimate across them. The per-person editor is the Business feature in the next section. On lower plans, treat the number as the total for the task and say in the description who owns which part.

What is Time Estimates Rollup?

Rollup is a second ClickApp, also on every plan. Turn it on from the App Center the same way: All ClickApps, then Time Estimates Rollup.

With rollup on, the parent shows its own estimate plus every subtask estimate. Help's example is a parent at 1 hour, one subtask at 1 hour, and another at 30 minutes. The parent displays 2 hours 30 minutes. Click the field to see the split between the parent and each subtask. Rollup also works with estimates per assignee.

You can show the column on List, Calendar, Table, and Gantt. Two exceptions are easy to miss:

  • In List view, if subtasks are shown as separate rows, the parent does not include the rolled up total.
  • Team view and Workload view do not roll estimates up. Help says each task and each subtask is counted on its own so capacity stays accurate. A rolled up parent plus the subtasks would count the same hours twice.

In List and Table, column calculations can show the sum, average, or range. Those calculations include rolled up values. Use the sum at the bottom of a List when you want the hours for a project without opening every task.

Estimate the subtasks, and let the parent roll them up. A single number typed on the parent, with blank subtasks, goes stale the moment the work is broken down. Subtasks vs checklists helps you decide which breakdown is worth estimating.

When do you need the Business plan?

Setting a different estimate per assignee is on the Business plan and above. Help also says the Multiple Assignees ClickApp has to be on. After that, open Time Estimates in the App Center and check Estimates per assignee.

What changes:

  • Any estimate already on a multi-assignee task is split evenly across those people.
  • You can then type a different value for each person from the task, or from List, Table, Gantt, or Team view. Help says to click the hourglass and enter the time.
  • The total still shows on the task, the views, and Dashboard cards. Click the field for the breakdown.
  • If you later turn Multiple Assignees off, the per-person numbers are added back into one total.

Business is $12 per user per month billed annually, or $19 if you pay monthly. Unlimited, at $7 billed annually ($10 monthly), includes estimates for the task as a whole, not the per-person split. Free Forever includes the same task-level estimates at $0. Prices checked October 2026. Confirm them on the ClickUp pricing page and in ClickUp pricing.

Guests can use estimates, including the per-person view, when an owner or admin allows it. They cannot enable the ClickApp themselves.

How do estimates show up in workload?

Workload view can measure effort with time estimates, with the number of tasks, with sprint points, or with certain custom fields. The Workload button in the upper left is where you pick the measure. Help says the default display is Time Estimates.

Two extras are worth knowing if you plan the week from that view:

  • You can show tracked time beside the estimate on scheduled tasks, from Layout options.
  • You can enter effort as a percent of capacity. In the week period, Help says the cell can show both the percent and the hours against capacity, such as 10% and 4h/40h.

A task that spans several days does not have to spread its estimate as a flat average. Help says daily values can follow a saved work-by-day allocation. Edit that from the workload article if the hours belong on specific days, such as a review on Thursday and build time on Monday and Tuesday.

Estimates do not create the schedule by themselves. Put a start and due date on the task, or it has no days to land on. The calendar side of that is in ClickUp calendar view.

Use estimates for planning and staffing. Use time tracking when the hours need a record for a client or a payroll export. Teams that only need a personal to-do list rarely need either feature. Todoist is the lighter tool in that case, and ClickUp for personal use explains when the extra structure pays off.

Frequently asked questions

Are ClickUp time estimates free?

Yes. ClickUp Help says time estimates are on all plans. An owner or admin has to enable the Time Estimates ClickApp. Estimates per assignee start on the Business plan.

How do you add a time estimate in ClickUp?

Open the task, click the Time Estimate field, and type a value such as 1 hour, 1h, or 30 mins. Press Enter on Windows or Return on Mac. The same field works in List, Table, Gantt, and Team view.

What is Time Estimates Rollup?

It is a separate ClickApp on every plan. The parent task shows its own estimate plus the estimates on its subtasks. A 1 hour task with a 1 hour subtask and a 30 minute subtask shows 2 hours 30 minutes.

Can you assign a time estimate to a team?

No. ClickUp Help says teams cannot be assigned time estimates. You can split an estimate across individual assignees.

Do time estimates replace time tracking?

No. An estimate is the hours you expect. Time tracking records the hours that were spent. Workload view can show tracked time next to the estimate.
