Short answer
ClickUp Me Mode shows the tasks you are responsible for, including optional subtasks, assigned comments, and checklist items. It is on every plan, but only in a Workspace with more than one person. Mind Maps and Page views cannot use it. Turning on Default to Me Mode changes that view for everyone.
ClickUp Me Mode is the filter for "what is mine." Views start by showing tasks assigned to everyone in the Workspace. Me Mode narrows that to the tasks you are responsible for, and it can also pull in subtasks, assigned comments, and checklist items that have your name on them. Help puts both Me Mode and the assignee sidebar on every plan, and only in a Workspace that already has more than one person.
The filter you turn on from your avatar stays yours. Other people keep seeing the view the way they left it. A separate switch, Default to Me Mode, is the one that changes the view for the whole Workspace. Team boxes, which answer a different question, are covered in ClickUp Team view. The rest of the product is on the ClickUp hub.
What is ClickUp Me Mode?
A ClickUp view shows every assignee by default. Me Mode is the short path to the opposite: only the work that needs you. Help describes two related controls that live next to each other in the upper right of a view.
| Control | What it shows | Who it changes |
|---|---|---|
| Avatar filter (Me Mode) | Your tasks, and the action items you toggle on | Only you. Help says it applies across your views and does not change the view for other people |
| Assignee sidebar | Tasks for the people and Teams you check | The saved view, once you click Save |
| Default to Me Mode | Me Mode as the starting state of that one view | Everyone who opens the view |
With the avatar filter on, creating a new task assigns it to you. That is easy to miss. If you are dropping a task onto a shared List for someone else, turn the filter off first, or you will own the task you just created.
Three options sit inside Me Mode. You turn them on or off from the Me Mode modal while the mode is enabled.
| Option | Tasks that appear |
|---|---|
| Comments | Tasks with a comment assigned to you. Comments assigned to a team you belong to stay hidden |
| Subtasks | Tasks that have a subtask assigned to you |
| Checklists | Tasks that have a checklist item assigned to you |
The Comments option is narrower than it sounds. If a comment is assigned to a Team and you are a member of that Team, Me Mode will not surface it. Assign the comment to a person when you want it in their Me Mode. How assignment works is in ClickUp assigned comments.
How do you turn ClickUp Me Mode on and off?
Help's steps for the personal filter are short.
- Open a view. In the upper right, to the right of the Assignee button, click your avatar.
- Use the toggles to show or hide subtasks, comments, or checklist items assigned to you.
- Click the x on your avatar to turn the filter off.
That setting follows you across views in the Workspace. It is not a saved property of one List. If you turn it on in List view, the next view you open is filtered the same way until you clear it. Other members do not inherit it.
To make one view open in Me Mode for everybody:
- In the upper right of that view, click Customize, then More settings.
- Click Default to Me Mode.
Help says this updates the view for everyone. If you then change the Me Mode options on a view that already defaults to Me Mode, ClickUp asks you to save those changes for everyone. Use that switch on a personal "My work" view, not on the List the whole team uses for triage, unless you want every visitor to land on their own assignments.
You can star that personal view so it stays one click away. Favorites are private shortcuts, and they are a different control from Me Mode. The star, the pin, and the view alias are in ClickUp Favorites.
How does the assignee sidebar differ from Me Mode?
The assignee sidebar is for looking at someone else's list, or at several people at once. Me Mode is only you.
- In the upper right, click the Assignees button.
- Search for a person or a Team, or browse the list.
- Check each person and Team you want.
- Click Save to keep the view change.
To include task comments assigned to the people and Teams you selected, use the Assigned comments toggle in the lower right of the sidebar. Close the sidebar with the X in the upper right.
Guests are the exception Help calls out: they cannot see tasks assigned to other users when they use the assignee sidebar. A guest can still use Me Mode for their own work. They cannot use the sidebar to browse a colleague's assignments.
Saving the sidebar writes the filter into the view. That is why Help tells you to click Save. Me Mode from the avatar does not need that save, because it never becomes the shared filter. If you are about to overwrite a view the team relies on, check whether the view is protected or private before you save. Those locks are separate features, and this page does not set their plan limits.
Team view is the layout that puts each assignee in a box. It is not on Free Forever. Me Mode is. A solo Workspace gets neither the sidebar nor Me Mode, because Help requires more than one person. A two person Workspace on Free Forever can filter to "me" without buying Team view.
Which views cannot use Me Mode?
Help excludes two families:
- Mind Maps
- Any Page view
Everywhere else the control bar lists Me Mode, including List, Board, Table, Calendar, Gantt, Timeline, Workload, and Activity. Activity view's own article describes Me Mode as showing activity on tasks assigned to you, with a Default to Me Mode option under More settings. Workload view lists Me Mode as the filter for tasks assigned to you. The control is the same idea on each view. The rows it hides depend on what that view displays.
If the avatar is missing, check the view type before you check the plan. A Mind Map will not grow a Me Mode button on Business. A Page view will not either. Switch to List view, or to another task view, and the control is there on every plan.
When should a team default a view to Me Mode?
Use the personal avatar filter when you want a quiet morning list and you do not want to change what anyone else sees. Use Default to Me Mode on a view you built for that purpose, such as a "My open work" List at the Space level. Leave shared client Lists and sprint boards on the full assignee set so a teammate can see the board, not only their slice.
A practical split:
| Situation | Use |
|---|---|
| You want your own tasks for the next hour | Avatar filter. Turn it off when you are done |
| A shared view should open on each person's work | Default to Me Mode on that view only |
| You need one person's queue, or several people | Assignee sidebar, then Save |
| You need a box per person and status | Team view, which starts on Unlimited |
| You are the only person in the Workspace | Neither control is available. Add a second person, or just use the List |
Me Mode does not replace priorities, due dates, or a clean set of statuses. It only hides other people's tasks. If the List underneath is still a mix of clients and personal errands, the filter will faithfully show all of your mix. The first week setup in how to use ClickUp is the part that makes the filtered list worth opening. Plan prices, if you later want Team view or a heavier reporting layout, are in ClickUp pricing.
