Short answer
ClickUp Timeline view is a linear schedule of your tasks. Free Forever includes 60 uses, Unlimited includes 100, and Business, Business Plus, and Enterprise include unlimited uses. Opening the view counts as a use. Guests cannot view or create it.
ClickUp Timeline view is a linear schedule: tasks laid out in time, in rows, so you can see what overlaps. It is not the dependency chart. That chart is Gantt view, and the use limits are different. Timeline is capped at 60 uses on Free Forever and 100 uses on Unlimited. Business and above include unlimited Timeline uses.
If you only need a week of due dates, Calendar view is on every plan with no use cap in ClickUp's views table. Open Timeline when the question is how work lines up across people or groups, and read the use rules first so a quick look does not spend the cap. Plan prices sit in ClickUp pricing. The view index is the ClickUp hub.
What is ClickUp Timeline view?
ClickUp Help describes Timeline view as a linear way to visualize and schedule tasks. The view follows your personal timezone. Tasks are sorted in chronological order. A task with an earlier start date sits closer to the top. Tasks that share the same start date and the same due date are sorted alphabetically.
You add it from the Views Bar: click + View, then Timeline. You can mark the view private or pin it so it stays on the bar. The Customize menu on the right is where you name it and change the layout. Private views, as a plan feature, are listed on Business and above in the views limits article, so the private checkbox is not something to count on from Free Forever.
The time period control is in the upper-left. Zoom with the plus and minus buttons on the right. Move forward and backward with the slider at the bottom of the view.
Days outside your workweek, public holidays, and custom organization-wide exceptions show as grey in every time period except Months. Those markers come from the Workspace work schedule. In the Months period, individual non-working days are not drawn. You can also see the same non-working days when you set task dates.
How do groups, Me Mode, and time off work?
Timeline view is a table of tasks over time. Each row is one value of the group you selected. Timeline also supports nested grouping: a primary group and a second group in the same view. The outer row is the scan. The inner rows are the tasks inside that group. Help points to its own "Group tasks in Timeline view" article for the exact group fields, so pick the grouping in the product rather than assuming it matches List view.
Two filters answer "who is busy":
- Me Mode shows only tasks assigned to you.
- The assignee sidebar shows the assigned tasks of one person, or of several people at once.
Personal time off can be viewed, added, and edited from Timeline view, so a week that looks empty might be a person who is out, not a person with no work. That is the right check before you drag more tasks onto someone.
A practical schedule is ordinary. For a six-week site launch, put a start date and a due date on each task you want to place in time, group so each row is a workstream you can name, and add a second group only when one row is too tall to scan. Turn on Me Mode when you are planning your own week. Open the assignee sidebar when you are checking whether two people are booked on the same days. Grey non-working days tell you not to treat a Saturday as slack unless your workweek includes it.
Sharing follows the usual view rules. You can share a view publicly with someone outside the Workspace. Private view sharing with people in the Workspace is described as fully available during early access, and Help says future limits may apply.
Which plan includes ClickUp Timeline view?
The Timeline limits article and the views availability table agree on the caps. What counts as a use, from the Timeline article, is broad:
- Creating or opening a Timeline view
- Editing the view
- Creating or moving a task
- Editing a task while you are in Timeline view
- Any action taken while using Timeline view
Prices below are from our tool data, checked October 2026. Help lists Business Plus. Our price table does not publish a Business Plus rate.
| Plan | Timeline uses | Price in our data |
|---|---|---|
| Free Forever | 60 | $0 |
| Unlimited | 100 | $7 per user/month billed annually ($10 monthly) |
| Business | Unlimited | $12 per user/month billed annually ($19 monthly) |
| Business Plus | Unlimited | Not in our price table |
| Enterprise | Unlimited | Custom |
The role table in the Timeline limits article is strict. Guests cannot view a Timeline and cannot create one. Members and admins can do both. If a client needs the picture, a guest seat on this view will not show it. Share a different view, or export from a view their role can open. Guest sharing in general is covered in ClickUp guest access.
Workload view has the same use shape in the views table: 60 on Free Forever, 100 on Unlimited, unlimited on Business and above. Timeline shows when the work sits. Workload shows whether the person is over the hours you estimated. You do not need both on day one.
How is Timeline different from Gantt and Calendar?
Use the view that matches the question. The limits below are from ClickUp's views availability table.
| Question | View | Free Forever | Unlimited |
|---|---|---|---|
| What is due on which day? | Calendar | Included | Included |
| What overlaps, by group or person? | Timeline | 60 uses | 100 uses |
| What is blocking what, and what slips? | Gantt | 60 uses | Unlimited |
| Who has too many hours? | Workload | 60 uses | 100 uses |
Gantt is the chart of start dates, due dates, durations, and dependencies. The Gantt guide covers arrows, milestones, critical path, and the reschedule cap of 1,000 dependent tasks. A Gantt chart definition is the concept if the team has not used one. Timeline does not replace that. It is the cleaner screen when you want rows over time and you are not drawing dependency arrows.
Calendar is the better daily habit on Free Forever and Unlimited, because the views table lists it as included rather than metered. Switch to Timeline for a planning session, then leave. On Business, the meter is gone and Timeline can stay pinned.
Dependencies still matter if the launch order is real. Set those on the tasks, from List or from the dependencies guide, even if the picture you look at is Timeline. A schedule with no order is only a stack of dates.
When should you skip Timeline view?
Skip it when the work has no dates worth lining up: an inbox of requests, a backlog you have not committed to, a board that changes every morning. List or Board will tell the truth with less cost. On Free Forever, 60 uses go quickly if "any action while using Timeline" counts, which is what Help lists.
Skip it for guests. The limits article does not give them this view.
Consider it when several people share a fixed window, time off should show on the same screen, and you are on a plan where the use cap will not run out mid-project. Unlimited's 100 uses can cover a short plan. A team that lives in the schedule every day should price Business, at $12 per user per month billed annually, or confirm they can stay inside 100 uses.
Asana is the alternative when you want a polished timeline and a simpler rollout. Asana Starter is $10.99 per user per month billed annually, and the free plan stops at 2 users. ClickUp costs less at the first paid tier and keeps docs and time tracking in the same Workspace, with more to configure. Compare them in ClickUp vs Asana.
A Timeline that works is small: dates on the tasks that should appear, one grouping you can explain, Me Mode for your own day, and the assignee sidebar when you are balancing people. Add Gantt only when something is actually waiting on something else.
