Short answer

ClickUp Board view is a Kanban board available on every plan, including Free Forever. Columns follow task statuses unless you group by assignee, priority, tags, due date, task type, or a custom field. Each Space, Folder, and List already includes a Board.

ClickUp Board view is the Kanban board: cards in columns, moved by dragging. Every plan includes it, including Free Forever, and each Space, Folder, and List already has a Board. You add another Board when one location needs a second layout, such as a private view of your own tasks.

The columns only help if the statuses underneath them match the way work actually moves. Set those up with ClickUp custom statuses before you spend time on card fields. The wider product map is on the ClickUp hub.

What is ClickUp Board view?

ClickUp's Kanban article describes a board as cards in columns that stand for stages, such as To Do, In Progress, and Done. The same article says the point is to see work in progress, spot a pile-up, and keep tasks moving.

In ClickUp the cards are tasks. They stay connected to assignees, dates, automations, and reporting. A board is a view of a location in the hierarchy, from a single List up to everything you can access. It is not a separate project that stores its own copy of the work.

Help's comparison of the two board styles is straightforward. A Kanban board is a continuous flow with no fixed end date. A Scrum board sits inside a sprint, a fixed period, and the set of tasks is meant to finish before the next period starts. Board view can show either pattern. The sprint container comes from ClickUp sprints. The planning terms are in Kanban vs Scrum.

How do you add a Board view?

Open the Space, Folder, or List. In the Views bar, click + View and select Board. The create article also lets you check Private view, so only you see it, or Pin view, so it stays in the bar. Name it from the customize panel on the right.

You can embed a Board with a slash command. From a task comment, a Doc, a Chat reply, a text block on a Dashboard card, or Notepad, type /bview and use the modal to choose the tasks. Help mentions this for sprint workflows such as tracking milestones on epics. Milestones themselves are a task type, covered in ClickUp milestones.

To create a task from the board, click the + at the top of a column. The new task takes that column's status. That is faster than opening the task form and setting the status afterward.

How do columns and rows work?

Columns start as statuses. Each status on that Space, Folder, or List becomes a column. Change the stages from the status menu for that location. ClickUp's Kanban article suggests a common set of Backlog, In Progress, In Review, and Done, and its FAQ says to start with three to five columns. Add a column when a real handoff exists. A column that nobody waits in is noise.

To group by something other than status, use Group. Help lists these options:

Group byWhat the columns mean
StatusThe stage of the work. This is the default.
AssigneesOne column per person.
PriorityUrgent, high, normal, low, or whatever flags you use.
TagsOne column per tag.
Due dateCards gathered by when they are due.
Task typeMilestone and any other types you use.
Custom fieldA dropdown such as client or channel.

The Kanban article's path is: click the current group name in the upper left (it often says Status), then Group, then the field. The create article puts the same control on the Group button in the upper left.

Subgroups add rows. Status columns with assignee rows show each person's cards across every stage. ClickUp Help says subgroups are on every plan. Guests can add them if they have Can edit or Full permissions, because adding a view requires that access.

To add a row set: open the Board, click Group, click + Add subgroup, and pick the field. The field you used for columns is grayed out in the row menu, and the other way around. Click the grayed option to swap columns and rows.

You can also build the subgroup from the settings icon: Group, then Add subgroup.

Filter the board before you add rows. ClickUp's filter article suggests "Today & Earlier" on due date or start date when you want overdue work and work that starts today. Filters are available on the mobile app as well.

What shows on a card?

Open Customize, or the settings icon, then Fields. Turn on assignee, due date, tags, priority, or a custom field. You can edit those on the card without opening the task. Help's advice is to keep the card short, because a card that shows every field is slow to scan.

Subtasks can stay nested under the parent or appear as their own cards. From the settings icon, choose Subtasks, then Separate. Each subtask lands in the column that matches its own status.

Other actions from the create article:

  • Drag a card to another status column to change the status, and drag it up or down within a column to reorder it.
  • Shift-click to select several tasks, then move them together.
  • After you change the view, a popup asks you to save. Autosave keeps later edits for everyone who can open that view.

Sharing has two paths in Help. You can share a view publicly with someone outside the Workspace. You can also share a private Board with people in the Workspace or with a link. Help marks private-view sharing as fully available during early access, and says future limits may apply. For client updates, a shared view is one option among the patterns in how to share project updates with clients.

How do automations fit a board?

ClickUp describes an automation as a trigger, optional conditions, and one or more actions. The Kanban article gives two examples teams add on a board: when a task moves to Review, assign the reviewer, and when every subtask is Done, move the parent task to Done. Plan limits on automations vary. The setup steps and those limits are in ClickUp automations.

A board is a weak place to edit a lot of fields at once. When you are filling dates, estimates, or custom fields down a column of tasks, ClickUp table view is the faster screen. Use the board for movement, and the table for data entry.

Who is Board view a good fit for?

Use it when the team asks what is in progress and the answer should be a glance at columns. Support queues, content pipelines, and personal task lists all fit. Help says a personal List with two or three statuses is enough, and a private Board keeps that list to yourself.

Trello is the simpler Kanban tool if a board is the whole product you want. ClickUp is the better fit when the same tasks also need Docs, time tracking, or a dashboard. The trade-off is spelled out in ClickUp vs Trello. Prices for ClickUp, checked October 2026: Free Forever is $0, Unlimited is $7 per user per month billed annually ($10 monthly), and Business is $12 billed annually ($19 monthly).

Frequently asked questions

Is ClickUp Board view on the free plan?

Yes. ClickUp's Kanban article says Board view is available on every plan, including Free Forever, and that each Space, Folder, and List already has a Board.

How do you add a Board view in ClickUp?

Open the location, click + View in the Views bar, and select Board. You can mark it private or pin it. You can also type /bview in a Doc, a comment, Chat, a text Dashboard card, or Notepad.

Can you group a ClickUp board by assignee?

Yes. The Group control can use status, assignees, priority, tags, due date, task type, or a custom field. Subgroup rows are available on every plan.

Is Board view the same as a sprint board?

Board view can show a continuous flow or the tasks in a sprint. The time box, points, and rollover come from ClickUp Sprints, which is a separate feature.
