Short answer
ClickUp for students works as one Workspace for assignments, Docs, and a calendar. Free Forever is $0 and covers tasks, Docs, and Calendar view. Use it when coursework has due dates and group work. Use a lighter to-do app when you only need a daily list.
ClickUp for students is a place to put assignments, readings, and group work where a due date is a field, not a line in a notes app. ClickUp's own student page describes the same pieces: tasks with due dates and attachments, Docs for writing, a calendar you can drag work onto, and comments you can assign during group projects. Free Forever is $0, with no credit card required on that page. Most students should stay there until a specific limit blocks real coursework.
If you already use ClickUp for personal errands, the lighter daily setup is in ClickUp for personal use. This page is the school version: courses, deadlines, and a study plan. The ClickUp hub links Docs, calendar, and pricing around it.
How should a student set up ClickUp?
Keep the hierarchy small. Free Forever includes 5 Spaces. One Space named School is enough. Use a Folder for the term and a List for each course. A second Space for a job or a club can wait until the first term is boringly clear.
| School item | ClickUp item | What to fill in |
|---|---|---|
| Term | Folder | The semester name, nothing else |
| Course | List | One List per class |
| Assignment or exam | Task | Due date, priority, and the brief in the description |
| Reading or lab step | Subtask or checklist | Only if you will check it off |
| Essay or notes | Doc | Linked from the assignment task |
| Study block | Task on the calendar | A date, not a second copy of the assignment |
ClickUp's student page says you can add due dates, attachments, and custom fields so the details sit on the task. On Free Forever, custom field values share a 60-use pool. One dropdown for assignment type (essay, problem set, exam) is enough. More fields spend the pool before midterms. The limit is explained in ClickUp custom fields.
Statuses can stay simple: To do, Doing, Waiting, Done. A paper with a draft and a revision does not need a status for every campus office. If you want a tighter set later, ClickUp custom statuses shows how to change them without inventing a new List.
Storage is 60MB on Free Forever, and attachments are what count. Link readings from Google Drive or Dropbox instead of uploading every PDF onto the task. Tasks themselves do not count against storage.
How do you track assignments?
Each assignment is one task. The name should be the thing you will hand in, not the course. "Lab 3 report" is a task. "Biology" is the List.
Put the due date on the task. If the work starts before it is due, add a start date too. ClickUp's planning guidance for Gantt says a task needs both dates to appear as a bar. You do not need Gantt for a normal term. Calendar view is on every plan and is the screen to open on Sunday. How that view works is in ClickUp Calendar view.
Priority is a flag, not a mood. Use High for anything that is both soon and graded. Leave Normal for the rest. Urgent should be rare, or it stops meaning anything. The habit is in ClickUp priorities.
Docs are for the writing. ClickUp's student page says you can draft assignments in Docs, format the page, link tasks from the text, and embed resources. Docs are on every plan, including for guests. A wiki, which is a Doc you mark as the source of truth, is capped at one on Free Forever, Unlimited, and Business. For school, an ordinary Doc per course is the right shape. You do not need a wiki. Details are in ClickUp Docs.
A study plan is a second list of tasks, not a rewrite of the assignments. Block time for the work that already has a due date. What is time blocking is the method. In ClickUp, those blocks can be tasks on the same course List, filtered to you, or tasks on a personal List if you do not want them mixed with graded work. Personal List sits outside your Spaces. Members and admins can use it. Guests cannot.
Recurring tasks fit weekly problem sets and a Sunday review. Set the recurrence on the task rather than copying it by hand. The options are in ClickUp recurring tasks.
How do group projects work?
Invite classmates as members if they should see the whole School Space. Free Forever includes unlimited members at no charge. Invite someone as a guest if they should see only the shared List. On Free Forever, guests have full create and edit access on what you share. You cannot set them to view only or comment only. That control starts on paid plans. If the group is small and trusted, members are simpler.
ClickUp's student page points at comments you assign as action items, and at Chat for keeping the conversation next to the work. Chat on Free Forever is a trial with 30 days of message history. Unlimited, at $7 per user/month billed annually, includes ongoing Chat history. For a ten-week project, comments on the tasks are enough. Move to Chat only if the thread is replacing a separate group chat you already pay attention to. What Chat does and does not replace is in ClickUp Chat.
Agree on one List. Split the project into tasks with one assignee each. A task named "everyone writes the report" will not get done. Subtasks work when one person owns the parent and the pieces are real handoffs.
Shared Google Calendar is a common miss. The ClickUp Google Calendar integration is on every plan, and it is a personal connection. You can sync dated tasks to a calendar under My Calendars. You cannot sync them to a shared Google Calendar. Events you create in Google do not become tasks. The rules are in ClickUp Google Calendar. Each person connects their own calendar if they want class blocks beside ClickUp dates.
What does ClickUp cost for a student?
Prices were checked in October 2026.
| Plan | Price | What a student actually uses |
|---|---|---|
| Free Forever | $0 | Tasks, Docs, Board, Calendar, Table view, 60MB storage, 5 Spaces |
| Unlimited | $7 per user/month billed annually ($10 monthly) | Unlimited storage, native time tracking, Goals, ongoing Chat |
| Business | $12 per user/month billed annually ($19 monthly) | Unlimited dashboard uses, workload, more guest seats |
Free Forever is the plan to start on. Gantt, Goals, time tracking, and Chat messages are trials on that plan, not the daily student toolkit. Calendar, List, Board, and Table view are included. Table view is useful when a course grade tracker is really a grid of assignments. It is covered in ClickUp Table view.
ClickUp's pricing page asks whether it offers discounts for nonprofits, students, educators, or startups, and answers yes. It tells you to use the resources on that page. A Help Center article says ClickUp offers discounts to some nonprofit organizations and educators, and that you should contact Support about customized pricing. Neither page publishes a percentage in the text we can cite, so this guide does not state one. Ask Support only if a paid feature is blocking schoolwork. Do not upgrade because a discount might exist.
The full comparison of the free plan and the first paid plan is in Is ClickUp free? and ClickUp pricing.
When is another tool a better fit?
Todoist is the better fit when the job is a personal checklist: readings, errands, and a due date, with no group project and no Doc. It is lighter, and the comparison is ClickUp vs Todoist. Todoist's free plan and paid plans are a different product decision. Start there if ClickUp's Spaces and statuses feel like overhead for a single person's list.
Notion is the better fit when the notes are the work and the tasks are a side list. ClickUp's strength is the assignment next to the date. Notion's strength is the page. ClickUp vs Notion walks through that split.
Trello is the easier board if the group only needs columns such as To do, Doing, and Done and will not write in the tool. ClickUp is the better fit when the same Workspace should hold the paper, the deadline, and the task list after the group project ends.
The mobile apps matter more for students than for a desk-based team. Use them to check due dates and add a task, and do the first setup in the browser. What the mobile app includes is in ClickUp mobile app.
